'Everyone writes in Tolstoy's shadow': Tolstoy by A.N. Wilson
An intelligent and accessible biography of one of the most famous writers in the Russian canon, Lev Tolstoy, by the acclaimed historian A.N. Wilson. Wilson is the author of more than 40 books, including biographies of Hitler, CS Lewis and the Victorians. "Tolstoy" was awarded the Whitbread Prize. Wilson sweeps away the belief that Tolstoy's works were an exact mirror of his life, and traces the roots of Tolstoy's art to his relationship with God. An historical novel by A.N. Wilson, based on the life of 18th century English potter Josiah Wedgewood, is set to be published in September 2012. :: Read The Observer's interview with "Tolstoy" author A.N. What we're reading...
Pure (Andrew Miller)
> order online
Four years prior to the French Revolution, provincial engineer Baratte is asked by the Court to organise the removal of the centuries old Les Innocents cemetery, which is overcrowded and beginning to pollute local residents' homes. As he struggles to implement the necessary measures, the project comes to symbolize the sweeping away of a traditional way of life, a metaphor for the Revolution to come, and Baratte encounters resistance from the residents that confounds him and forces him to call into question his rational, Voltaire-esque way of thinking. Miller's writing is wonderfully tight and resonant, and his evocation of 18th century Paris, with all its noise and dirt, is magisterial. The philosophical and physical confrontations between reason and superstition, between the modern and the ancient, are beautifully drawn, without pretension, and make this novel an absolute joy.
